The picturesque village of Brienz lies on the upper eastern shore of the glacial waters of Lake Brienz. The cobbled Brunngasse that runs through the centre was once awarded the title most beautiful street in Europe with most of the old buildings decorated with wood carvings which is what Brienz is still famous for today.
Brienz is the starting point for many excursions and hiking trails that lead you in to the mountains of the Jungfrau region. A popular trip is up to the Brienzer Rothorn via the rack railway. At 2350m, the panoramic views of the Jungfrau peaks are spectacular.

Things to see and do around Brienz
Lake Brienz is full of historic villages, splendid castles and provides easy access to over 500kms of hiking trails. Staying in Brienz is also the gateway to the Jungfrau area - home to some of the best ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland. A must-do trip is to take the train to Europe's highest railway station on the Jungfraujoch at 3454m and experience the panoramic views of the Alps. Another very popular day out is to take the longest cable car in the Alps to the top of the Schilthorn.
