Saalfelden & Leogang resort guide & reviews Ski area, apres-ski, things to see & do in Saalfelden
Resort Reviews
Leogang is a small resort linking up to it’s larger neighbours of Saalbach & Hinterglemm in the next valley over the Asitz mountain. The main town is Saalfelden approximately 5km away and has a population of around 16,000. It has all the facilities you would expect of a town of this size with many bars, restaurants and shops. Most tourists tend to stay in Saalfelden and drive or take the bus to the ski lifts.
Après-ski
Leogang has a few bars and restaurants close to the main gondola but most tourists tend to venture in to Saalfelden a few nights a week.
Childcare
There are several ski kindergarten clubs that take children from the age of 3 plus if children are under 6 years old, they ski for free.

Saalfelden & Leogang ski area
Being linked to Saalbach and Hinterglemm gives a massive 200 km of perfectly-groomed slopes for all levels although it's fair to say the runs are more suited to beginner and intermediate skiers with 90km being Green and 95km Blue and Red.
The highest lift only goes to 2100m which is fairly typical of some Austrian resorts. However, due to the weather systems, the resorts get more than enough snow throughout the season and just to make sure you don't ski on grass, 90% of the pistes have snow cannons.
Beginners
Leogang is a great place to learn to ski or board as the pistes are never that crowded and the gentle slopes allow you to progress at your own pace.
Intermediate
The 200km of pisted runs are mainly for the intermediate skier where you can go touring all day. If you are a confident and fit then a definite must is to ski around the entire area in a day.
Starting from the gondola at Leogang and heading towards Saalbach, you can choose to go in either direction up to Hinterglemm and back around the other side – similar to the Sella Ronda circuit in Corvara and Alta Badia. Sun worshippers will probably follow the anti-clockwise direction.
Advanced
Leogang is not really for the expert skier as most of the runs are for imtermediates. However, having said that, there is some superb off-piste gems to be found on the 15km of itinerary trails when touring over in Saalbach and Hinterglemm and on the decent to Leogang. There are also several challenging black runs around Saalbach such as Nordabfahrt on Schattberg Ost.
Cross-country
Saalfelden - Leogang has an extensive network of 150km of cross-country trails with double tracks and skating trails some of which connect the nearby villages of Maria Alm and Maishofen.
Snowboarding
There are 2 parks - a Learn to Ride Park with boardercross in Saalbach at the Bernkogel lift and the NITRO Snowpark in Leogang at the Asitz fun run. For freeriders, the whole area is superb and gets great reviews year after year.
