If you are taking a city break in Salzburg during the winter, why not try some skiing. There are many superb international ski resorts with many around 1 hours drive making it possible for day trips. Another possibility is to visit Lake Wolfgangsee and ride the steepest steam rack railway in Austria to the top of the Schafbergspitze. The 360 ° panoramic views of the Salzkammergut lakes including Mondsee, Fuschl and Lake Chiemsee are not to be missed.

During the summer and through to the start of the ski season, you can also drive up the Ziller Valley, past Mayrhofen and up to the Hintertux glacier which offers superb glacier skiing.
