Myrkdalen ski resort guide Ski area, apres-ski, things to see & do

Resort Review

Despite being Western Norway's largest ski resort, not many people have heard of Myrkdalen and certainly not as a ski destination.

Thats maybe because it only declared itself a ski resort in 2003 when the first ski lift was installed - its moved on a long way since those early days with a modern lift infrastructure and good of f the slope amenities.

Transfers take just 2 hours by train or bus from Bergen making the slopes easily accessible for a weekend break.

With an average snowfall of 18 - 24 metres a season, the 30kms of pistes are guaranteed to be covered in deep snow. It is the perfect destination for fantastic skiing, snowboarding and ski touring with the ski season starting at the end of October right through to the start of May!

Myrkdalen ski area guide

Whilst you can ski throughout the season, the best time is from mid February onwards when there is considerably more daylight than in December and January. Whilst the highest skiable point is only 1060m with a maximum vertical drop of 685m, you might be thinking that snow cover could be a problem. However, being so far North, snow is virtually guaranteed right to resort level.

Beginners

There are 3 beginner slopes across the mountain that cater for beginners before they move up on to the blue runs.

Intermediate

Intermediate skiers will find more than enough terrain to keep them entertained with 12 pistes graded blue or red.

Advanced

There are 2 black pistes but the secret is the off-piste terrain where the powder is deep and plentiful. For more adventure, try ski touring. There are many routes coming off the top of the Finnbunuten peak at 1060m.

Things to see & do

If you don't ski or fancy something different, there are plenty of other activities to try...

  • Dog sleighing
  • Snowmobile safari
  • Tobogganing

Featured ski chalets & cabins

Our view on Myrkdalen ski resort

Myrkdalen is off the radar - for the time being - meaning no lift queues and uncrowded slopes. If you are looking for a good family resort, guaranteed snow and an experience totally different to the Alps, then Myrkdalen is the ideal choice.

If you like Myrkdalen, you may also want to look at Hemsedal and Ruka in Finland.
